Winton Sprint PCV 2007

Winton is always a great track for our early Porsche's. It is not a horsepower track, and a well driven early car can put many later cars to shame.

This weekend Michael Japp and Marcus Hancock came up as well, so we had three early 911's competing. It was also a great excuse to have a boys weekend away!

Having still not upgraded the suspension and being at the Winton Historics only a few weeks before, I was still in the groove of Winton and very comfortable, despite the car being really light and loose through the sweeper. For those that have not raced at Winton, the sweeper is one corner that is taken generally at around 80mph in an old 911, and is also a place that the faint hearted come to grief, and the confident pick up lots of time.

Michael had not been to Winton previously, so I offered to jump in the suicide seat and show him round for a couple of laps. He appreciated the help, but now it was time to go out and it by himself.

Marcus like myself has done lots of laps around Winton. We had come up the year before together and double entered his car so that I could get some seat time in preparation for the Dutton Rally in September of 2006. Marcus has a 1970 911E with a 2.7 210hp motor bolted in. With narrow guards and a great suspension package, the car is a sleeper, and when pushed can embarrass some very quick cars and drivers!

Michael's car is a 1971 911E, and for many years has been his pride and joy that he has used as a driver. However Michael got the idea that he really wanted to go Group S racing, and has turned his car from daily driver to mean machine! Jappy as he is affectionately known, is a pharmacist from Hay in country NSW. He is known for his country know how, and as a result we have coined the term JappTehnica in direct response to his home made improvements and enhancements to his car. Being Group S homologated means that the car cannot be over its 2.2 litre capacity. However he has installed a new JappTechnica muffler! Very loud, and very cool looking!

The days runs were great, with Marcus and I catching and passing many newer 911's, 944's and even 993's! I think we even passed a GT3! What is going on there!

At the end of the day, we all had our cars in one peice, and some great video and data. Now it was off to Shepparton for a meal, some sleep and DECA the following day.
